Man fell 25 meters down from cruise ship
A 84-year old passenger of the "Sun Princess" fell over board in the evening of Nov 24, 2014. A surveillance camera had caught his fall from a height of 25 meters about 175 miles off Sydney at 8.40 p.m. The search for the man was suspended the following afternoon. He had been reported missing, and the ship was thoroughly searched in vain for the man in the morning. Then the "Sun Princess" turned around and followed its track along the coast of New South Wales. The AMSA was notified of the man’s disappearance on Nov 25 at 3 a.m. AMSA’s Dornier 328 search aircraft was dispatched to the search area which measured 148 square nautical miles and was experiencing 25-30 knot winds and a two- to three-metre swell. The Australian Maritime Safety said the man was very unlikely to have survived the fall. Advice also indicated that the man would not have been able to survive in the water for an extended period of time given his age, clothing and weather conditions at the time of the incident. With no sightings of the man, the search was called off after medical officials said he was unlikely to have survived in the rough conditions. The ship was on a 13-days-cruise, and had left Auckland on Nov 21 bound for Sydney. It was due to dock at Sydney’s White Bay terminal on Nov 25 at 6 a.m. but was now expected to return to the port with a one day-delay accordingly and an ETA as of Nov 26. The start of the following cruise was also affected by the delay.
